Renaissance Posting In Class

Please post at least three sentences of your thoughts/questions. If you can add a link, great -- but I'm not expecting that, given that you are doing the reading in class.

I thought it was interesting how all the explorers were motivated to, well, explore by the tales of "chivalrous heroes". It's kind of cool that stories can push people to this kind of movement, especially in such numbers.

Near the beginning of the reading, it mentioned "Thule Inuit raiders", so I did a quick Google search on them. I found this website on them, which mentions they come from Alaska and migrated to Greenland, which may explain how they were able to raid into Europe.

I do have one question:
What does the reading mean when it mentions "marginal nobles"? The sons who would not inherit but were still technically nobles?

I was sort of confused on what chivalry really was. It was the term for the knightly system of the time and the word came from words such as caballero (Spanish for knight). The word has many meanings that were different today than they were back in medieval times. However, it was basically only used to describe knightly virtues and honor.
What was the most recent renaissance according to scholars?

I went in and looked more at the Medici family. The family rule for 4 centuries and even produced three popes. Their slogan, which somewhat describes their control, is “Money to get power, and power to guard the money”. They became members of French and English royalty. Part of the success of their bank was because of their development and implementation of the double-entry bookkeeping system. They led the Italian renaissance through their sponsorship of art and architecture.

In the reading, it says that all of the power fell into one family, the Medici's. I was wondering how the family got there position and power. I found that the Medici family was very important in Florentine from the 13th century to around the 17th century. Three popes came out of the Medici family and many rulers of Florence, and in later times members of the English and French royalty. The Medici family was able to bring Florence under there power. When they did this, it allowed for a environment where art and humanism could easily happen. Some say that the Medici family is held responsible for the birth of the Italian Renaissance. The Medici family also started a bank that was very prosperous. The family is said to be one of the wealthiest families in Europe. Because of there money the were able to secure land, and political power where ever they wanted.

Art was clearly an important role in this time as it was to be reborn. In the reading it said that the famous Italian artist Botticelli, did just that...made a new "race" of art you could say. I wanted to read more about Botticelli and his famous paintings, so i searched him and of course I got stuff from wikipedia!

Life Story of Botticelli

A very famous painting from Botticelli is "The Birth Of Venus" which I remember seeing at somepoint in my life.

The Birth Of Venus

I think it's neat that a lot of his paintings, people painted them in World Arts with Teacher Lee, I think it's interesting how it ties in with eachother.

I also looked up the word Chivalry, which according to Wikipedia is "a term related to the medival institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of kinghtly virtues, honor, and courtly love." The word itself is derived from a french word chevalier, which means one who rides a horse.

Ok, for my Renaissance Posting, I looked up Henry the Navigator

He was a fairly interesting guy and he discovered (through his middle men) a lot of new land. He was a prince in Portugal, and never actually ascended to the throne, but he did a lot for Sea travel and exploration nevertheless.

1) How did Florence (a relatively big city) come under the control of one priest? What cause this switch?

2)As time went on, did people begin to re-inhabit certain areas that were abandoned during the plague?

In the reading it mentions that power fell into the hands of the Medici Family. They were a powerful Florentine (in Italy) family from the 13th -- 17th century. Three popes came from the family and they were patrons of some of the most famous works of art. They established an environment that excepted art and humanism and allowed it to prosper.
Wikipedia
I also found a picture of their family tree which I thought was interesting

The 4 elements also interested me. Aristotle proposed this idea which said that earth, water, air, and fire were the 4 elements. I found out that different cultures (Chinese, Indian, etc..) came up with different things such as the 5 basic components or the four qualities. There are different interpretations of the elements and many different artistic pictures of them.

I found this article interesting, and I wanted to find out more about some of the people they mentioned. First of all, they mentioned Christendom I know I've heard the word, but I needed a refresher so I went on the Catholic encyclopedia and it said -
In its wider sense this term is used to describe the part of the world which is inhabited by Christians, as Germany in the Middle Ages was the country inhabited by Germans. Next, the article talked about the line of the Elbe and Northern Danube Rivers, so i found this
map. Next, when I think of the Renaissance, I think of architecture, is that because of the Christian churches new form of architecture that was so important it could be recognized after all of this time? This article stressed the importance of chivalry and humanism, why was that?
Were nobles considered chivalrous because of their social class? Since chivalry was so important, did it give women more rights/were they treated better? Lastly, I researched Portugese Prince Henry, and i found this information on him...

Prince Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese royal prince, soldier, and patron of explorers. Henry sent many sailing expeditions down Africa's west coast, but did not go on them himself. These expeditions were sent to create much-needed maps of the West African coast, to defeat the Muslims, to spread Christianity, and to establish trade routes.

1. What business did the mintacelli family do to become so rich?
2. Did the church approve of chivalry?
3. What islands were colonized by the people aspiring to chivalry?

At the beginning of the reading it mentioned that there were little ice ages. What determines if an ice age is a little one or a normal one?
The following link is about Little Ice Ages and it discusses the effects it had on Europe.
It talks about it's effect on agriculture, economics, wine production, forests, health, art and literature, etc.

How could all of the power fall into the hands of one family (Medici)? Did they manipulate people to make it this way or did it just happen? How long were they overthrown for?

I was also wondering how the rise of humanism happened?

So i didn't exactly know what Humanism is so i looked it up and found, That Humanism is a philosophy of right and wrong. Also i looked up the Bohemian Forest that it is defined by a mountain range and is split into two. the Šumava and the Zadní Bavorský les which are the Bohemian side and the Bavarian side.

I was wondering if there was an significance to the Bohemian Forest in history?

Also who took up Humanism?

In the very first paragraph of the reading it said that the plague became less severe. How does a plague become less severe? Can a certain form die out? Or can it become less contagious?

Also, on page 516 it says that the Medici family had power "fall into their hands"- how did this happen? How did they just get power?

Also, when did Western Europe become obssesed with the Christian Church? Christianity has a big emphisis on everything they do in this period, but when did it begin?

When I read about the Church of San Lorenzo-- I was interested in seeing more pictures of it. I thought it was interesting that he copied ground plans from very ancient Churches, and that he based his concept by old Greek and Roman architects. This is a link that shows the Church from the outside: (sorry I do not know how to make it live)

In the reading, it says "the use of paper made it cheap and easy to transmit rulers' commands to the farthest corners of their realms". So, I was wondering when paper got to Europe from China. I found this website that explains
how paper got to Europe. It says that the technique of paper-making as we know came from China and then to Samarkand. From Samarkand, it went to Baghdad in the 8th century and then Damascus, Egypt, and Morocco in the 10th century. Paper-making was not really "official" in Europe until around the 12th century. However, in the beginning, paper was rejected by Christianity because they thought it showed how the Muslim culture was spreading, and Christian rulers, such as the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, didn't like that.
This site from Georgia Tech also has a pretty interesting "tour" on paper-making. Click on "Continue the Tour".

Then, I was wondering where Samarkand was, so here's a map. Samarkand is one of the cities in the paler beige region.

Lastly, I was interested in learning more about the new architecture that "reflected classical taste". So, I found this link from the Met's site about architecture in Renaissance. It has a pretty good explanation of the style as well as short descriptions of the "three key figures in Renaissance architecture".

I thought this reading was interesting because there was a lot of information about chivalry. I always thought that chivalry meant that you were a gentlemen and were kind to women. I never knew that it meant that you had a dream of discovering an island off of Africa and marrying a princess from there and becoming ruler of that island.I also though it was all about being selfless, but apparently it was about wanting to be more powerful.
Question:
During the time of these chivalris men what islands did they discover?

I also thought it was interesting to find out that the reason for exploring over the Atlantic was in search for a profit, I always thought that they just wanted a quicker way to get to India. Oh, well.

I noticed that the reading mentioned Croesus. It said that he was probably the richest man in the world. I wanted to know a little more about him. I found that he was the king of Lydia (in western Anatolia). The Lydians were thought to have been one of the first to use coins as money. Here is a picture of their coins. He had bad relations with the Greeks and started a campaign against Cyrus the Great. Before leaving, he stopped at the Oracle at Delphi. He was told that if he continued, a great empire would be destroyed. He took this to mean that he would win, but he did not and it was his empire that was ruined.

Here is a map of Castile.

The reading mentioned a family called Medici, and said how power fell solely into their hands in Italy. I wanted to find out a little more about this family, so I did a little searching...

I found this website for a TV series entitled Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance on PBS.com, and it was actually pretty helpful (although it may have been embellished a little bit, because it was a TV show.

One fact that I found really interested was that the Medici formed a partnership with the Catholic Church so that they got 10% of the earnings of the Catholic Church, which is a pretty good deal... and if people couldn't pay, they were excommunicated. The Medici family in general sounds very ruthless.

The website is actually really cool... it has a whole family tree for the Medici and all, plus lots more information about the family and the TV series.
