1. If Rome and China were so connected by trade and had items from each other spread throughout their lands, why were they so unaware of each other's existence? Didn't people know or care about where their foreign goods came from?

2. Why was Rome at war all the time? Wouldn't being constantly at war be bad for farmers (Rome was very agriculture-centered) and the rest of the economy? Also, didn't it weaken the republic by have troops always fighting in foreign lands?

1) The reading mentions how corrupt provincial governors were, so how are the state governors of the US any different? How do we avoid the corruption?

2)As it becomes easier for manufacturers to move production to places like China, will we become like Rome, where the poor peasants who couldn't find work lived in dire poverty?

1. It says on the timeline in the reading that the first settlement in Rome was in 1000 BCE. Does this mean that there were people there before Romulus and Remus? If there where why is it said that they founded the city?

2. Why does it only give credit to Romulus for founding Rome? The reading doesn't even mention that he grew up with his brother. Why is this?

It says on page 128 that expansion was mostly possible because of peoples' interest in war. Why did war lead to expansion? I understand that with war you can conquer, but there other neccesitys to become a well efficient empire.

It also says on 128 that all males who owned a certain amount of land were subjected to serve in the military. Were there specific details as to "men"?
